{"id":3762,"date":"2019-07-22T21:17:24","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T20:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gecco.org.uk\/blog\/?p=3762"},"modified":"2026-03-26T11:41:51","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T11:41:51","slug":"help-support-the-nappies-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gecco.org.uk\/blog\/2019\/07\/22\/help-support-the-nappies-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Help support the Nappies Bill!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"et_pb_section_0 et_pb_section et_section_regular et_block_section\"><div class=\"et_pb_row_0 et_pb_row et_block_row\"><div class=\"et_pb_column_0 et_pb_column et_pb_column_4_4 et-last-child et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_0 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p>Nurseries are being encouraged to write to their local MPs now to gather support for the Nappies (Natural World Standards) Bill, which aims to reduce single-use plastics in disposable nappies and cut costs for local government and parents.<\/p>\n<p>The Bill which promotes reusable nappies was presented to Parliament by David Linden MP for Glasgow East in March 2019 and was followed by a meeting on 11 June in Westminster.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One disposable nappy equals 7 plastic bags<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>David Linden said: \u201cPeople may not know that the average daily use of disposable nappies has the same natural world footprint as seven plastic bags.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Nappies (Natural World Standards) Bill has real potential to help empower parents to make informed choices about the nappies that they use for their children, as well as cutting waste costs for local councils and making a huge reduction on single-use plastics that end up in our natural world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bill advocates that parents should be informed of the natural world's harm caused by disposable nappies and be made aware of the financial advantages of reusable nappies for families and local authorities.<\/p>\n<p>It is also intended to incentivise local authorities nationwide to roll out reusable nappy voucher schemes, such as the Real Nappies for London scheme, to reduce disposable nappy waste.<\/p>\n<p>The Bill is supported by the Nappy Alliance, a trade association of reusable nappy manufacturers, who want parents to receive more information about reusable alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Guy Schanschieff, chair of the alliance, said: \u201cReusable nappies have increased in popularity in recent years but there is much more that can be done to support and entice new parents, by giving them more product information and ensuring that they are not be misled by so-called \u2019eco\u2019 disposable nappies which are not natural world friendly.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gecco.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Bill-as-at-July-2019_19299.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Download a copy of the Nappies Bill 299<\/a>\u00a0as introduced 18.03.19 (5 pages, pdf)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Cheryl Hadland has contacted all of Tops Nursery group\u2019s local MPs to get support for the Bill and is encouraging all nurseries nationwide to do the same by emailing their settings' local MPs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contact your setting's local MP now!
