{"id":3845,"date":"2019-07-23T16:39:18","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T15:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gecco.org.uk\/blog\/?p=3845"},"modified":"2026-03-26T11:41:51","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T11:41:51","slug":"children-taking-a-stand-against-plastic-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gecco.org.uk\/blog\/2019\/07\/23\/children-taking-a-stand-against-plastic-pollution\/","title":{"rendered":"Children taking a stand against plastic pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"et_pb_section_0 et_pb_section et_section_regular et_block_section\"><div class=\"et_pb_row_0 et_pb_row et_block_row\"><div class=\"et_pb_column_0 et_pb_column et_pb_column_4_4 et-last-child et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_0 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p>Just weeks after it was reported two sisters from Southampton had gathered a petition of <strong>400,000 signatures<\/strong> against the use of plastic toys in children's meals, 8 year old Jacob Douglas from Basildon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/mcdonalds-plastic-happy-meals-toys-young-boy-open-letter-a9008681.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hit the headlines<\/a> with his open letter to McDonald's telling them it would really make him happy if they stopped giving out the free gifts as they\u2019re \u2018killing a lot of animals\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>On their Change.org petition page Ella and Caitlin McEwan, aged nine and seven, say: \"We like to go to eat at Burger King and McDonald\u2019s, but children only play with the plastic toys they give us for a few minutes before they get thrown away and harm animals and pollute the sea. We want anything they give to us to be\u00a0sustainable so we can protect the planet for us and for future generations.
