Many people assume all bioplastics are made from plants and can break down completely in the natural world. But that\u2019s not the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The term \u201cbioplastics\u201d is actually used for two separate things: bio-based plastics (plastics made at least partly from biological matter) and biodegradable plastics (plastics that can be completely broken down by microbes in a reasonable timeframe, given specific conditions). Not all bio-based plastics are biodegradable, and not all biodegradable plastics are bio-based. And even biodegradable plastics might not biodegrade in every space. Sounds confusing? It certainly is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cThere are a lot of bioplastics or materials that are called bioplastics that are not biodegradable,\u201d says <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Constance I\u00dfbr\u00fccker, head of natural world affairs at the industry association <\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.european-bioplastics.org\/\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">European Bioplastics<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-GB\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">For some plastics, the same polymer chains can be made from renewable sources. The resulting bioplastics are chemically identical to their fossil counterparts. PET, for example \u2014 short for polyethylene terephthalate, which is the stuff most bottles are made of \u2014 can be synthesized from fossil fuel products or plants like sugarcane. The resulting material is the exact same. Such non-biodegradable bioplastics behave in the natural world just like conventional plastic and persist for an unknown but long amount of time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26347 wp-inserted-image\" src=\"http:\/\/ensia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Feature_bioplastic_inlineDef.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1190px) 100vw, 1190px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ensia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Feature_bioplastic_inlineDef.png 1190w, https:\/\/ensia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Feature_bioplastic_inlineDef-158x81.png 158w, https:\/\/ensia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Feature_bioplastic_inlineDef-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/ensia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Feature_bioplastic_inlineDef-768x393.png 768w, https:\/\/ensia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Feature_bioplastic_inlineDef-920x471.png 920w, https:\/\/ensia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Feature_bioplastic_inlineDef-610x312.png 610w, https:\/\/ensia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Feature_bioplastic_inlineDef-154x78.png 154w, https:\/\/ensia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Feature_bioplastic_inlineDef-243x124.png 243w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1190\" height=\"609\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Not only that, but <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">none of the standards for plastics<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> labelled as biodegradable or compostable today makes them suitable for disposal in the open space. Given that, can bioplastics play a role in tackling the natural world's problems? Or are they merely greenwashing? The most accurate answer is, it depends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"selectionShareable\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Tackling confusion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">There\u2019s no doubt, bioplastics are still plastics. Just because some of them are made from plants or have the potential to biodegrade under limited conditions, they can\u2019t be touted as \u201cplanet-safe.\u201d For the ones that claim to biodegrade or compost, the fine print is crucial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">So check the label: What does it say? Where and how is it supposed to biodegrade? How can you safely dispose of the product?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Finally, be cautious when you read that a material is oxo-biodegradable*.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0These are conventional plastics like polyethylene mixed with metal compounds that make them fall apart faster. According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/7468\/-Biodegradable_Plastics_and_Marine_Litter_Misconceptions,_concerns_and_impacts_on_marine_environments-2015BiodegradablePlasticsAndMarineLitter.pdf.pdf?sequence=3\">report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)<\/a>, it hasn\u2019t been proven that they truly biodegrade, and it is feared they might just accelerate microplastic pollution. Similarly, European Bioplastics warn that so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.european-bioplastics.org\/publications\/EUBP_QA_enzyme-mediated_degradable_plastics.pdf\">enzyme-mediated degradable plastics<\/a>\u201d aren\u2019t truly biodegradable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"selectionShareable\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Reduction remains key<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">There\u2019s no doubt, bioplastics are still plastics.
