In Semarang, Central Java, the OASIS Schoolyards initiative is transforming schoolyards into “urban oases” to combat climate challenges like heat waves and tidal flooding. Led by the Resilient Cities Network (R-Cities) with partners such as Milklife, Kuark, and Polytron, the program adapts a successful Paris model launched in 2018 to create green, cool, inclusive, and multifunctional spaces for learning and play.
From September 2024 to June 2025, five pilot schools integrated climate education across subjects, improved waste and water management, and redesigned outdoor spaces through participatory design. Projects ranged from composting leaf litter at SD Marsudirini Gedangan to building water filtration systems at SD 01 Gebangsari.
Beyond environmental upgrades, the program boosted teacher skills—82% reported better capacity to teach climate topics—and fostered a culture of sustainability. These efforts contribute toward Semarang’s open green space targets and support schools in pursuing national Adiwiyata environmental awards, showing how local action can strengthen citywide climate resilience.
